The Midtown area is one of the more historic in Ruidoso. Located on Sudderth Dr, it consists of a mile long walking district with specialty boutiques, shopping, dining, live entertainment and more. Many of the shops, restaurants and bars are housed in buildings built in the 1930s and 40s. Some of which are rumored to have been "speak easys" and gambling joints during Prohibition with hidden rooms and tunnels beneath them.
While many of the shops close by 6:00 PM, evening visitors can still experience street entertainment, wine tasting, brewpubs, fabulous art galleries, tasteful restaurants and a little bit of a nightlife including live music and dancing.
Even though the heart of Midtown is commercially oriented, it is surrounded on all sides by residential areas. Lots & homes tend to be on the small side, and many of them are older. Residential prices can range can from $130K for a small cabin to $320K or more for a larger home. There is some new construction in the area as the area becomes even more popular for those who want to be close to shopping, dining & drinking, we are seeing more homes being remodeled and property values are increasing.
Within walking distance of Midtown, is Wingfield Park (located just up Center Street). With the recent addition of a pavilion, walking trail and botanical garden, the park is a popular place to relax, picnic or play Frisbee. In the summer, special events, concerts and free movies are offered almost every weekend.
Grindstone Lake Recreation Area is only a 5 minute drive from Midtown, and there you will find a beautiful lake stocked with trout, miles of hiking, mountain bike trails, horseback riding, birding, kayaking, paddle boarding and the new Wibit water park for family fun.
