Utah - General Information
The State of Utah covers an area of 84,904 square miles, making it the 13th largest state in the US. The population was 2,233,169 as of year 2000, making Utah the 34th most populous state in the US. The state began when Mormon leader Brigham Young led pilgrims seeking freedom from persecution into the Great Salt Lake Valley in 1847. The name "Utah" is derived from the Ute Indian Tribe who lived in the area prior to the pioneers arriving. Utah was admitted as the 45th state on January 4, 1896. Utah's major lakes include Great Salt Lake, Lake Powell, Utah Lake. Bordering States include Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Wyoming.
