The State of New York - General Information
New York became the 11th state, admitted July 26, 1788 as one of the original 13 states to join the Union. New York is often called the "Empire State", possible due to its immense skyscrapers and the reputation of being the coountry's financial center. In population, New York ranks 3rd, behind California and Texas, with 18,976,457 residents counted in Census 2000. In area New York is the 27th largest state in the USA, with 54,475 square miles of land. The state's major industries include finance, communications, international trade, publishing, fashion, and communications. Some of this states most notable rivers include the Hudson River, Mohawk River, and Genesee River. Anumber of states share a border with New York including Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island (water border). The capitol of New York is Albany.
