The state of Montana became part of the the United States on November 8, 1889 as the 41st state. The name Montana comes from the Spanish word Montana, meaning "mountainous," although much of the eastern part of Montana is pastures and rolling praires. Today, Montana is a favorite destination spot for tourist with a great variety of outdoor adventures found in this Rocky Mountain State. Often called "Big Sky Country" because of its large size and open plains, Montana is the 4th biggest state in the USA Area with 147,046 square miles of land. The states major industries are farming and ranching, along with mining, energy production, lumber and tourism. The population was 902,195 as of year 2000, making Montana the 44th largest state. The states bordering Montana are Idaho to the west, North Dakota & South Dakota to the east, and Wyoming to the south.
