Minnesota became the 32nd state on May 11, 1858. Known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes," Minnesota got its nickname because there are more than 12,000 lakes located there. Minnesota is the 12th largest state in the US, with an area of 86,943 square miles. The population of the state was 4,919,479 in Census 2000, ranking Minnesota as the 21st most populous state in the US. Agriculture is the main industry, with corn, soybeans, sugar beets, wheat, dairy products being the main commodities. Some of the states more notable rivers are Major Rivers - Minnesota River, Mississippi River, Rainy River, and Red River of the North. The states sharing border with Minnesota are Iowa to the south, Michigan (across Lake Superior), North Dakota & South Dakota to the west, and Wisconsin to the east.
